WDEL Sports Director Sean Greene Visits

Sport Director and reporter Sean Greene for WDEL came to visit Padua’s journalism and television classes on November 12. He informed the students about what how he got started in the business and how he accomplishes each of his media requirements.

Green began his career with a radio job as a traffic reporter. He was content with staying in radio, as he stated, “The last thing I wanted to do was go into TV.” On the other hand, he did receive the opportunity of an internship in television. He took this opportunity and as he transitioned into another job, he was immediately recognized and accepted into the job for WDEL that he has today, simply as a result of his internship.

Greene also described his media process by taking detailed notes, particularly of sporting events, which he refers to as a “Shot Sheet.” These notes will eventually become a script about each event that he covers to ensure total accuracy.

He also described how he must hold the camera in one hand and the microphone in the other, becoming both the interviewer and the camera-person.  Unlike TV stations, Greene describes how WDEL must scale down their equipment size to be more manageable, yet still affordable.

He also included that he has a very hectic lifestyle. It takes him about one hour to create one minute of video. He added that he worked for a total of 75 hours last week, which is not too abnormal for his busy media schedule.

Greene also says that even in the radio, it is necessary for reporters to know how to write. Reporters must be able to do every aspect to ensure that a story is adequately captured.  Media comes in many forms today, and the same story by the same reporter will often appear online, in video, on Twitter, and on the radio.

Greene ended his visit with how it is important for anyone in media to keep up with new technology and the changing times.
